A chum has XP home and has split his hdd into 3 partitions C: is Windows D: is Applications and E: is saved documents.

The system is playing up and he wants to reformat only the C: portion.

Can He do this. without disturbing the D: & E: partitions

Exactly how does he go about it

Start the computer, insert the xp disk boot from 'd' drive or whatever the cdrom is, insert the xp disk and boot from it.

The option to install xp to 'c' drive plus formatting it is on the menu, this will not affect the other partitions.

It will affect the other partitions mightily - for a start, few if any of the installed programs will run, as the parts of them in the Windows section will be missing.

Secondly, and data stored in the windows partition (emails, addresses, settings, etc etc), which have not been explicitly moved elsewhere, will be lost.

A better option would be to try repairing the WinXP installation - much less hassle, and it may just fix things.

Another option is to come her and say in what way it's "playing up" - there may be know cires for the ills.
