XP Modem installation problem

I have a Medion PIII with an onboard Creatix V90 voice/fax/data modem - the device has always worked fine. I have recently upgrade my operating system from ME to XP Home Edition. Problem: XP does not automatically recognise the modem. Have downloaded (via other PC) an XP signed modem driver and tried to install again. The first time it took ok, after I cancelled the PCI communications device in the unknown devices section, but then the PC would not start up (hung at log-in screen). After returning to "last config that worked", I can now not install the modem.

Help - I am out of options! Cheers.
