XP Log On

I've got an annoying problem with Windows XP. The PC boots up to the blue log on screen but when I click on a user (myself) the pc does nothing. However if I press the old ctrl alt del TWICE a small windows log on screen comes up with my username and a password field. As I was not password protected I just clicked on Enter again TWICE and went straight to the desktop and everything works fine after that. anyone have any ideas please??

this could indicate a faulty shutdown sequence. XP writes to the hard drive when you shut down and this info is used for the next start up. If the writing to the hard drive is interrupted etc. this could explain it.
