XP Lockups - failing H/W diagnostics?

Locked

Recently getting regular lockups.

Event Viewer (Application) ERROR msg says -

"Event provider attempted to register query 'select' from AMI_Win_****_DiagEvent whose target class 'AMI_Win_****_DiagEvent does not exist. The query will be ignored".

String of 11 to 13 of these error messages appear after lockup where "****" is zipls120,
processor, video, network, modem, AGP, parallel, harddisk, CDROMDVD, floppy, audio, serial and memory.
Looked in 'Services' and found AMI DiagEventService STOPPED and wouldn't start saying that exe file missing.

Any advice for a bewildered novice??

(after u've 'ad yer dinner like!)

Presumming its Windows XP you have, have you tried System Restore?

Hi Totally-braindead -

Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore

Or: Start, Run, type

C:\windows\system32\restore\rstrui.exe

and click OK.

It will just "restore" the system to what it was before, you may have to try it with a couple of different dates but it does solve a lot of problems.

Thanks chaps -

Taking the least onerous option first what about trying to restore the missing file - using MS's System File Checker?

Strangly, For XP, MS Support don't actually tell u the PATH to where u type in 'scannow'.

(They do for ME which is - progs, assessories, systools, SysInfo, SysfileChecker but, in XP, there's no SysFileChecker tab from SysInfo).

Anyone shed lite?

btw, get lockups when trying to come out of Standby - not whilst PC active.
