XP locks up when surfing the web

System - 1gig athlon, 256 ram, running xp with 4 user accounts.
Problem -windows locks when surfing some websites (neopets, flamingtext for example) from any of the 4 log ins.
Surfing some more 'serious' sites does not appear to cause any problems (this session has lasted nearly an hour).
Windows event log shows no errors.
System devices show no problems.
Cooling fans working ok.
Some things I have tried:-
Disabling the firewall.
Running IE on its own.
Running si soft sandra which gave an error modem#0line playback DX-DS E8878000A looks promising but can find no info.
Is it possible for some websites to cause problems?
Any help / suggestions most welcome for a seriously harrased dad.

Seem to have solved this problem by uninstalling
the modem, moving it to a different PCI slot and reinstalling. Have had over 4 hours trouble free surfing.
