XP loading process stops

I am trying to load XP Pro with SP2 onto a new hard disk, the system goes through the loading process until the point where it says it is Starting Windows then I get a message which says:

STOP: C0000221 Unknown Hard Error
\system root\system32\ntdll.dll.

(The last 'l's' could also be 7s)
Can anyone tell me what this means and how to rectify it or has it detected a glitch the the hardware?

rename the existing ntdll.dll to ntdll.bak

copy ntdll.dll from a friend running xp sp2 into the following folders in this order and

%windir%\ServicePackFiles\i386
%windir%\System32\Dllcache (hidden folder)
%windir%\System32

Many thanks, I have XP SP2 on this computer but how do I copy into a system which hasn't loaded?
the message appears on a blue screen and the computer stops.
As a secondary question would it be possible to install the new hard disk as slave on this machine and copy to it that way?

where it says it is Starting Windows

It has copied the files onto the hard drive by this point so the folders should be there.

did you format the drive in FAT32 or NTFS?

If NTFS then use NTFS reader click here boot on a floppy to read the files.

If FAT32 then use a win98 bootdisk click here
