XP Laptop wont start up - Winlog.exe problem

Hi,

I'm trying to fix a laptop (XP Home) for a friend, it starts to boot up then it says,

Winlog.exe - unable to locate componant

application failed to start because ODBC32.dll was not found

The same message comes up when trying to start in safe mode too.

I have put my XP disc into his laptop and started the recovery console but now I'm not sure what to try or do.

Any help would be gratefully received.

Regards, Chris.

have you tried SFC /RUNNOW with xp disc in the drive, i have used it to fix winlogon errors in xp in the past.

Tap F8 or F5 as it starts select last known good configuration.

If this doesn't work or you cannot get into safemode (by the same method) and run sfc /scannow you will need to do a repair install.

Download ODBC32.dll from here click here - Select the FREE download and follow the simple instructions. (no need to run the free scan)

Hi again,

I ran chkdsk /r from the recovery console, the results said 'chkdsk found and fixed one or more errors on the volume' but still getting the winlog error message on reboot.

Tried 'last know good configuration' but still the same.

Tried doing SFC /RUNNOW from recovery console but it says 'command not recognized'

Repair XP by install over the top of existing system

1. Boot the computer using the XP CD. You may need to change the boot order in the system BIOS so the CD boots before the hard drive. Check your system documentation for steps to access the BIOS and change the boot order.

2. When you see the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see This portion of the Setup program prepares Microsoft Windows XP to run on your computer:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3. Press Enter to start the Windows Setup.

To setup Windows XP now and Repair Install , press ENTER.

DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you Do Not want to load Recovery Console).

4. Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5. Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6. Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot.

Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears.

Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Can I use my copy of XP on his laptop for the repair?

Forgot to add that my XP disc is an old SP1 disc.

I have got his 2 original Toshiba Product Recovery CD's though.

Can I use my copy of XP on his laptop for the repair?

Yes but you will need to reinstall some updates on completion.

"I have got his 2 original Toshiba Product Recovery CD's though."

If you use these they will format the drive and revert the laptop back to the day he made the disks therefore loosing all his later files, music, documents, programs etc.
