xp keeps restarting

I have just upgraded from Win me to Xp home with sp2.
I can't turn the machine off, xp keeps rebooting when I try to shut down. The only way out is to cut the power at the power switch as it reboots

Any suggestions?

Have you had a look at the Power Options in Control Panel?

I have.
It is set as Home/Office desk
Advanced power management is enabled
hibernate is enabled
but it still reboots on shut down

Settings / Control Panel / System / Advanced / Startup and Recovery / Settings. Make sure the box is UNCHECKED where it says "Automatically Restart" under System Failure."

Also look in the event viewer see if any big warnings or errors are there

Thats not quite the problem, mine only reboots when I try a normal shut down, but thanks.

I've tried that, it was mentioned in the MS support pages, didn't work
