My niece has windows XP home edition. When she's connected to the internet and tries to open up pop-ups that require javascript, the box come up blank. For example in Direct line insurance's website, can access the website but when tries to 'obtain a quote' that box will come up blank.

You could check that Java is installed / activated
In IE go to 'Tools' tab 'Advanced' and see if the boxes for Java or VM are checked.
Also if you click here it will automatically check if java is installed and download the latest version if it is not.
