XP Installation Problem

Hi --

a friend of mine has just bought a new motherboard for his PC, and also a new hard drive. All working now. But when he installs XP (from a disc that has worked on his pre-modernised PC) he gets right to the end of the process and is then asked for his password. He hasn't set a password. No passwords enabled in the CMOS settings either.

He tried doing a workaround, basically as described at click here

This worked like a charm, getting into the Windows Repair system on the XP CD - until he got to stage 11. At this point he was presented with a pop-up message telling him that he was not an authorised user. Please would he install SP2 !!

Does anyone have the faintest clue as to what is going on here?

Thanks.

What XP CD is he trying to install from? OEM CD, up grade CD?

It's an OEM CD with SP2 included. It has worked on a previous PC to install from scratch.
