XP Installation failure

After installing SP2, the operating system would not load. I've tried booting from installation CD then reinstalling XP, but the installation failed, and now each time I try to the use the CD I get error messages like "File acs.sys caused an unexpected error (18) at line 3514 in d:\xpclient\base\boot\setup\setup.c." or "acpi.sys is corrupt" or "File \i386\halacpi.dll could not be loaded. The error code is 18." What do these mean, I what can I do to install XP? Is the harddrive 'cooked'?

Sounds like your CD drive is failing, or the disc needs a clean.

I built a computer recently and had a very similar problem. This sounds like it could be a problem with a memory module. If you have two then try removing one and see if that helps. If no change then try the other.

Hope this helps
