xp home won't start

This is an intermittant fault. Switch on, beeps after POST, shows the hardware page then stops. Have to unplug and select "start normally". Other symptom is that the hardware page has moved to right and slightly down. Have reinstalled OS no different. Am I right in saying that the next thing to happen is that NTLDR starts up and installs OS. Where does it reside as seem unable to find it on C drive

hardware page moved due to drivers not yet loaded for graphics card.

If crashing looking for OP system before XP screen appears then possibly bad / failing sector on HDD of master boot record.
