XP Home problems

Having had problems with the computer, I decided to reinstall XP Home over the top of the original installation, thinking that all existing files etc would still be OK.
I have done this several times before over the years with little or no problems.
This time being the exception.
After a deal of a struggle I got XP back on, all the existing programs show as being there but accessing them is the problem.
Like AVG it is installed on the HDD but where is it, I can't reinstall it without deleting it first.

It is similar with other programs.

Can't find the Modem either, and haven't been given any driver disk for it.

Any advice will be gratefully received.

Otherwise it looks like a full format and start from scratch again.

I wonder if you've installed another xp on same partition. have a look in boot.ini (may show).

I will check that, there are 3 partitions, put on by PC World, it is actually my daughters PC so can't check at the moment.
I never partition mine, but do run 2 HDD's.

It will be in a day or so before I can get over to check, but will get back to you on that.
