XP Home hangs at boot-up

Having just installed Service Pack 1 my laptop now hangs at the screen "Windows XP".
I've tried booting into Safe Mode and tried using Last Know Good Configuration but it still hangs at the same place.

Any ideas how I can proceed? I only have a Recovery CD that came with it and that will only format etc. which I don't want.

I've had trouble with XP(home) with SP1 it switched off as soon as the xp logo came on my problem turned out to be a USB device as soon as I tried to start and the USB powered up the system went Off. May not be of any use to you but if you do have any other devices connected try starting without them

There are no devices connected to the laptop at all, not even an external mouse - just the mains power lead.
