A friend has just called to say he has been turning the electricity on and off all day so he thinks the pc has been going on and off as well as he can't boot it now. He has the black boot screen and the four or five choice black menu.

He has tried them all and the XP temp bar goes then after that it comes up with the Emachines splash screen and a few rattles then goes back to the menu again.

Any ideas ??

tell your friend to turn off computer, restart and start tapping F8 key

this will give you a few options, tell him to select safe mode from the list

when in safe mode tell him to run a scan disc, firstly without ticking the two boxes then ticking them

when he has ticked the two boxes to do a complete scan he must re-boot and this will check his HDD for errors

If the machine fails to boot in safe mode, try using last known good config. This will use settings which were used the last time his machine successfully booted and he logged on. Hope it helps
