XP Help & support and My Computer problem

My XP Home installation has developed two problems.

1. Help & Support does not appear when I click on it. I think this has happened before and I found out how to clear it, possibly here, but a search failed to find the solution.

2. The icons on the My Computer page fail to appear, all I get is the searching torch.

If anyone can throw light on either of these problems I would be very grateful.

First you could try System Restore, If it works You may after, have to check for MS Updates if it's not set to Automatic

Try a Windows repair.

Sometimes the system files (those required to run Windows properly) can become corrupted.

Here's how to run a check on your system files:
• Click Start; Run.
• In the Run box, type cmd.exe to open the command prompt window.
• At the prompt, type sfc.exe /scannow
• Press ENTER. If Windows finds problems with the system files, you will be prompted to insert your Windows XP installation CD to restore the files.

If no problems are found and the scan finishes, type exit and press ENTER.

Start - Run - type services.msc press ok

scroll down to help and support and check it has "started"

If not right click select properties in the start box set to automatic and click start.

Close services window.

Thanks for your replies. I tried them all but none seemed to work. Browsing around elsewhere, I was reminded that using Toniarts Easy Cleaner can corrupt Help & Support files and I had been done that some time ago, but did not make the connection. For others who have the same problem I found a fix here click here
That fixed My Computer as well. Thanks again.
