XP freezing on start-up

My PC had been chugging along quite happily with one HDD and one CD drive.
A couple of days ago I bought a couple of ATA100 IDE cables and fitted a DVD Rom and a second HDD/
I made sure that the jumper settings are as follows HDD1=primary master
CD1= cable select
HDD2=secondary master
dvd= cable select
after installation I checked the CMOS set-up to confirm that the BIOS had found the new configuration, it had, so far so good.
Tried to start XP and PC froze.
I can start in SAFE MODE but not regular, any thoughts?

Put both HDDs on the same ribbon cable, ditto for the optical drives.

HDD1=primary master CD1= cable select HDD2=secondary master dvd= cable select after installation

As stated put both HDD on
the primary IDE cable the drive with the OP system on set as master and the other as slave.

put both optical drives on the secondary the write as master the rom as slave.

Do not mix master and cable select
