XP freezing a bit too often

  myfoot 19:32 16 Feb 06

Yes this is starting to happen a bit too frequntly and was wondering if anybody can guide to me to procedures or software that would monitor as to where and why this is happening. I can't say what programme or action is the cause and am surprised each time it happens. Actually I could say that it tends to happen when I'm closing programmes and getting ready to disconnect and shut down. I'm on dial-up. Thank God and Big Bad Bill for restore points in XP otherwise I'd almost give up if I had to redo all my Opera cusimisations.

Have you looked in Event Viewer?

FReeezing PC

1. Overheat due to faulty / blocked fans

2. PSU voltages

3. Household power surges fridge etc switching on/off

4. faulty memory stick try memtest click here

5. virus or spyware scan for both especially if shutting down with in a few minutes of switch on or internet use

6. driver conflicts especially grahics cards get the latest drivers for your equipment

Have downloaded memtest and will try that also. I think it may be Opera related as I think it has always happened when preparing to shutdown and Opera is the most used and always the last prog to be shut down . Anyway I'll come back to this thread after next freeze. Machine is Acer laptop and should be early in its life 2 years light use. Standard OEM hardware

If you suspect Opera, use Internet Explorer for a while.

Ran MemTest for 1 1/2 hours and 5000% coverage NO ERRORS

Well the freezing seems to be caused by my disconnecting from the internet

which I do by right clicking the connection icon in the sys. tray and clicking

"disconnect". It happened again tonight( N0 programme running) even though

several attempts to reproduce it ( with Opera running, or all programmes

closed.) failed. Even though sometimes right clicking the icon simultaneously

brough up the context menu and also the "connection properties" box. You

know the larger window that has connection name, data sent/recvd, etc.
Also no record in "Events Viewer" all 3

Rule out Opera by using Internet Explorer for a while.

i'm getting the same problems

every time mine freezes up its showing a Dcom error in the event log

  myfoot 11:41 18 Feb 06

For Graham, when the last freeze occured all programmes were closed, including OPERA, and there was no listing in events viewer

Are you on dial-up?
Can you provoke the freeze, make it happen? I can't make it happen it's a bit random maybe every 10th disconnect.
