XP freezing

Within the last few days my XP pro based system has started to freeze during boot up. This happens just before the "welcome" screen.
The fault only seems to happen after the computer has been off for a couple of hours or in the morning.
Pressing "reset" causes the computer to start normally. The HDD containing XP is only three months old.
AMD Duron 1200, 512mg RAM, dual boot ME and XP on two seperate drives.
Any help would be appreciated.

Right-click My Computer, choose Manage > Event Viewer.

XP will often try to correct an incorrect shutdown by restoring 'safe' settings - this causes the apparent freeze, when in fact it is examining the error logs and swapping drivers, etc.

By the time that you have realised the 'freeze' and hit the reset button, XP has everything the way it wants it, and so loads quicker next time.

Event Viewer will usually point to the culprit.
