My friend acquired a computer with Windows XP which had been lying for some time. It appeared to be working and she tried to update Windows to sp2. The computer crashed and it will now not boot into anything - not even safe mode. As she does not have a copy of XP can she now format and install Windows 98se?

Yes is the quick answer.

As long as the machine has it's Certificate of Authentication - a label with the ID number on - then any XP Home or XP Pro which ever your friend has will do to boot from CD.

Everything is going fine except that she does not have drivers disk. Don't know whether this is the reason why she cannot get internet connection not even with a usb modem. Her computer is Dell 2200 and although I've looked on the Dell website with the intention of downloading the relevant drivers for her - I cannot see Motherboard drivers - is there anywhere else they can be obtained?
