xp continually reboots

  tugtac 20:06 08 Dec 06

after doing a defrag, the next time I booted up xp ran up to the point just before the welcom screen, the hard disc ( I think it was the hard disc) gave a very audible click and reboot starts all over again and repeats the sequence continually, question, any one else had a similar problem? is the hard disc u/s? and will I be wasting my time doing a reinstall?

the hard disc is on its way out. Back up your data immediately and use the PC as little as possible until you have. Then buy a new hard disc (they are cheap these days click here) and reinstall windows on it, then you can import your data back in.

or you have a corrupt device driver.

can you get in safe mode?

Happened to me recently, and FruitBat is spot on in my case.

thanks fellas, got into safe mode, did chkdsk,no better.
message was "windows/system32/config/system"
started xp cd-rom, went into "repair" but to no avail!
so it looks like a corrupt file that cannot be repaired? as you suggested.
ah well looks like a reinstall and hope the hard disc has not been physically damaged.
many thanks, but a thought, did the defrag cause the damage, it was ok before the defrag
