having bought a new pc, i would like to give my old machine to a family member.
i would reformat the harddrive first and reinstall the machines original copy of xp and activate it in the new owners name. the question is, is this proposal ok with microsoft or would i be in breach of any licence agreements. any views on this matter would be welcome.

My understanding is that the licence remains with the machine, therefore it is perfectly acceptable to do what you are proposing. The activation process (without registering) is anonymous anyway.

No problem at all. It will activate to the new name via the net, no personal contact required.
