My win xp pro sp3 wont boot it gets as far as
windows system32 drivers 1394.sys
it hangs for a few seconds then reboots.
I've tried safe mode same thing happens
i can't use a restore point as I can get the menu to select it but not far enough to get a list of restore points
Any Ideas?

If you have the original XP disk you can boot up from that and go into repair consul and run CHKDSK /p

i can't use origonal disc as it is only an upgrade SP1 disc so its non bootable,i loaded it from win 98

You have a Driver Problem Try starting while holding the Shift key down, if that does not work see if it will start in Safe Mode as less drivers are loaded.

Safe mode try tapping F5 or F8 while computer starts

i reloaded winxp pro sp3 but it wont recognise my full system back up which was sp2 do you think sp3 prevents reto backups?
Also does anyone know or guess what might be the next driver tring to load which is causing the trouble

How did you create Full System Backup? was it using Windows backup or Acronis to Create a Image?
