XP Boot Loader

I have WinXP on one hard drive and win98sd on another hard drive. At startup I get a choice of "WindowsXP" or " Previous Operating system on c:" Booting into XP is OK but when I try "Previous OS" (Win98) I get the message " No OS found" " Insert Start up disc". After going through the process I can get Win98 to start. Has anybody got any ideas?

Looks like theres a problem with your Boot loader as you have said. Whats it say when you type bootcfg into a command prompt.

Should be like this

[boot loader]

timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(1)rdisk(0)partition(1)

\WINDOWS="Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)

\WINNT="Windows 98" /fastdetect

The above assumes you are using WinXP Pro and Win98 is on partition 2

Thanks spikeychris you are right it is winXP Pro.
By partition I take it that you mean hard drive 2(D:)
Has that boot.ini got to be the same on both discs or just on Win XP

Spikeychris this is the boot.ini from Win98 disc:-
[Boot Loader]
Timeout=5
Default=C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT
[Operating Systems]
C:\ = "Previous Operating System on C:"
C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\BOOTSECT.DAT = "Windows XP Installation/Upgrade"

The Boot.ini on the XP disc is almost the same as the one you have shown.

Sorry for delay, very busy, does the bootini in XP say this..

[boot loader]

timeout=30 (or whatever it is set at)

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP
Professional" /fastdetect

D:\="Microsoft Windows"

This is what is on XP
[boot loader] timeout=30

default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS

[operating systems]

multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

c:\="Previous Operating System on C:"

Rename "c:\="Previous Operating System on C:" to..
C:\="Windows 98"

Thanks chris, will try that and see what happens.
Can't do much more at the moment, just got a job to do on win98 and I can't afford to screw anything up.
