XP Boot error recovery and lost data

Two of my friends have had problems with E-Machines PCs running XP. On both occasions, on booting up the PC the cursor just sat in the top left hand corner. The engineers who came out loaded the recovery disk, and ten minutes later they had what appeared to be a working system.But, all of their data was missing. Some data had been been copied to floppies, but a lot was lost. How can this data be recovered?. Does anyone know of a good, freeware, package?
