xp backup

My PC has restarted twice in the last few days with a message saying that files are missing or corrupted. Which files do I need to backup so I dont need to do a fresh install if this happens again. The first time the file was hal.dll. This time is was "system" in the windows/system32/config folder.
Is there of making a recovery disk?
How do you use Automatic System Recovery?

Thanks in advance

Hi Chris
I did do all that. Windows found a "damaged" installation and repaired it. Except when I rebooted it came up with a isass.exe error, something about incorrect password, then a blue screen that flashed up so quick I couldnt read it. Then it restarted.
