updates problem

Every time I go to shut down the PC, it offers to install automatic updates.
I accept this but it seems to have a problem.
I get the message "do not shut down or disconnect, it will shut down etc..."
followed typically by "Installing 1 of 1" and so on.
I come back 1 hour later and the same messages are repeating themselves.... "Installing 1 o 1", do not shut down etc".
This goes on indefinitely
It does not complete the installation and it does not shut down.
How do I correct this?
OS is XP Professional
Thanks

Try and download them manually from microsoft updates and when they show you click on them and a box will open underneath just tick the box do not show this update again. Something like that.
