....what exactly are they?

I've noticed recently that they are turning up on a regular basis in my Temp folder. Some are small (4kb), some are big (620kb)

Extensible Markup Language (XML) are files downloaded to create the pages you see from the internet. They are stored in forlder <Internet Temporary Files> to save you having to download the same files each time. You can safely delete these files if they become a nuisance but the best thing is to go into IE <Tools><Internet Options> and click the <Clear History> button.
