Writing to CD in Windows 7

I have an Advent Roma Laptop which came with Vista and has upgraded to Windows 7.
The CD/DVD writer is TSSTcorp_CDDVDW_TS-L633C
In exploring a Sony CD-R which already has some files on it written by my previous laptop, only the first file is seen. The machine will burn new files to the disc but then can't see them - other machines see all the files, including those written by the new laptop. It also wants to burn the file desktop.ini to the CD but I delete it from the burn list.
Also, when I put any data CD in the drive (e.g. a commercial software CD, definitely not writeable) explorer will indicate that desktop.ini is waiting to be written.
