I have been trying to reinstall win98 se on an old computer all goes well until i get to the computer restart i then get the splash screen saying starting win98 for the first time then a DOS prompt::
"c:\windows"what do i do next? sorry if this has been answered before but it`s not an easy search to perform.

yes and reinstalling again a friend has sugested trying Ubuntu

Are you sure its a DOS prompt and not asking which directory you want to install Windows to?
What happens if you hit Enter/Return?
You say it gets to 19 on MAT ALAN link. This means that you need to leave the CD in as it installs device drivers from it.

hi i have tried it with the cd in and outwit a flopy boot disc and reinstaled 3 times with 3 different 98se discs itdoes the same every time.With the second link skidzy the install gets as far as the splash screen with the pale coloured windows with getting ready to start windows for the first time then instead of going to the information input bit a black screen with

Sounds as if it is starting in DOS mode. When you get the c:\windows prompt type "exit" without the quotes then enter and it should start as normal.
