how can i change my default word documents to have 0 line spacing, rather than the 12pts it always opens with

The vista bit is irrelevant the version of word is what is needed. If using Word 2007 then on the ribbon on the little arrow at thr right of paragraph. This will open up a new window - select line spacing to single and then click on default.
