Unless there are essential advanced features in the document, save it as Rich Text Format *.rtf. Then it will be readable by almost any word processor.

I believe that Office 2007, Word 2007 saves its files in a new format. Try using the Save As option and saving the file in Word 2003 or Word 97 format and email the saved file to your friends. Alternatively get them to used the new Word 2007 reader available from Microsoft. This will enable them to read your file, but not, I think, to edit them.
