Word .fdx files

Hi, I have recently rebuilt my laptop and once i have re-installed all of the applications i started having the following problem:
Most of the Word documents (these are very old by the way, could be that some of them are still in Word 97 format) have developed copies with .fdx extension. Although not all documents have these, some are just .fdx and i am not able to open any of these.
Has anyone faced with this problem before and heard of .fdx files at all?

fdx is a very unusual extension.

I would try renaming one to .doc and seeing if it opens, as a test.

I've tried that and tried opening it with open office, MS works, wordpad and notepad. None worked. They just come up with random text. I believe that maybe it has something to do with the fact that previously these documents have been created on machines with russian windows?

Could it be a problem with ASCII codes or something along those lines?
