Word 2003 cursor problem

My son has inadvertantly pressed a key/sequence of keys which means that he can't use word properly. The cursor has a symbol next to it, (can't remember what it's called and can't reproduce it) but best decribed as a musical note, and the spacebar leaves a full stop that is centered rather than in the usual position at the bottom. Sorry I haven't described it too well but can anyone help?

Click the 'backwards P' ('musical note') toolbar button. Or Tools|Options, View tabs and in Formatting Marks untick 'All'.

Thanks for putting me out of my misery VoG™, I new it was something simple but couldn't remember for the life of me what it was!
