Won't rename/delete files in explorer, sometimes

  jonmac 07:20 28 Aug 04

I often get an error message when trying to rename or delete files or folders in Explorer as follows
Cannot Rename/Delete (filename) Access is denied
Make sure the disk is not full or write protected and the file is not currently in use

Problem is that the file is not in use and the disk is not full. It's intermittent, may not happen at the first attempt and closing and opening Explorer or re-booting cures it.

I'm on Windows XP Pro as Administrator. There are no other users. It happened before and after SP2 was installed (which it did without incident by the way).

I have occassionally noticed the same (XP sp1) and find that View / Refresh works.

It happens when I have already deleted/moved/renamed a file(s) but the change has not been reflected in the explorer window. So when trying to do something else to the file it is not found, I guess.

As to cause, I don't know. Very rarely occurs so I've not worried too much about it.
