Won,t Boot up.

My PC will not boot up beyond the Icons on the desktop. There are no icons in the task bar and although the mouse arrow will move about, clicking on anything will not work. The only way to turn it off is to hold the on/off button in. My OS is XPhome sp2. This happenned suddenly. What can I do please?

Restart, keep tapping the F8 key before the Windows screen loads. You should be presented with a boot menu - use the up/down arrows to select 'Last known good configuration' and press Enter.
