I am thinking of buying a laptop PC. I will want to sort a a connection to my internet, to do this i know you need a wireless router. My question is, when i ahve set up my router do i have to have my main pc switched on so that i can access the net on my laptop, or does the router enable me to use the net without having to log my pc on everytime?

routers normally have there own power supply, so no, your desktop will not need to be on :D

You may wish to have a look at the Simply website (click here), as I saw an offer for a Netgear DG834GT (108mbps, not 54mbps) ADSL Modem/Router, including either a free 108Mbps USB Adaptor OR a 108Mbps Notebook PC Card, which sounds ideal for you. I think (due to the speed of the modem/router), the price was £109.00 inc VAT (order no. RA94818).
