I bought a new laptop, which has vista, i want to buy a wireless router, but need one which is compatible with windows vista and virgin broadband. Been looking online, but so confusing! Anyone help??

Any router should do. They don't need vista drivers. It's the modems that need Vista drivers.

If you connect to virgin via cable. Get a DSL modem router.

If you connect via the telephone line. Get an ADSL modem router.

For cable - my Virgin contract specifies that they provide the cable modem - if thats the case you ideally need this to have an ethernet presentation (not USB). This can then be connected to your own wireless router.
