Wireless usb adaptor and power

I recently installed a netgear wireless network but now the usb port seems to have run out of power. I presume I can buy a powered usb hub? The usb port still works so long as power is not needed. The adaptor works on other machines. The usb wireless adaptors always say that they should be plugged in as close to the computer as possible, and not share a connection, so am I likely to find that it'll fail to work because of the presence of the hub?
Any advice/experience welcomed.
