Wireless Speed

I read somewhere that a way to improve wireless speed is by replacing the antenai that comes as standard with a desktop pc, with a longer version, (9dBi?). Does anyone have any knowledge on whether this is worthwhile? I am experiencing poor speed on a desktop which is quite a distance from my BT Homehub.
Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks

From experience and i ran a thread on this some time ago.
A better signal is from a usb wireless adaptor placed in a dock with a small usb extension.

I have excellent strength from my workshop and thats around 100 feet or more from the router, even better now ive changed the router to a Belkin N Wireless.
