My notebook is wireless and is great. However, I want to lend it to a friend who will not be using it wirelessly but needs to access the internet via a lead. She is on broadband ADSL. How does she go about this? Do I need to disable the wireless network before giving it to her?

If it is not going to be used "wirelessly" then, yes, disable the wireless adapter.

How she connects with a wired connection depends on what she is connecting to:

- a wired connection to a router would just be a matter of connecting by ethernet cable, setting the "Local Area Connection" to get its IP address automatically and she'd be online whenever the router was connected to the ISP.

- if using a USB ADSL modem, the modem's drivers would have to be installed in the laptop along with any ISP software required to get online.
