Wireless Networking Question

I have 2 desktop pc's and 1 laptop. PC (1) is the main pc and is connected to the internet via broadband. PC (2) is networked to PC (1) via a cross-over network cable. PC (1) needs to be on so that PC (2) can access the internet. I would like to know if I purchase a wireless card for my laptop and a wireless card for PC (1), can I create a wireless network where I can access the internet from my laptop? Also PC (1) is on the 2nd floor, so if a create a wireless will it work on my laptop which is on the 1st floor?

Another option would be to get a wireless modem router, thus the laptop can have access without the other PC needing to be on...
