I have a PC with Bt broadband in the conservatory, my son has one in his bedroom, can i do an ad-hoc connection with 2 wireless cards to link both machines to share printer and internet connection?

Simple answer is yes.

You will need to have the machine with the broadband connection and printer switched on for your son's computer to access the internet and printer though. Otherwise, it may be worth buying a router with a print server built in.
