wireless networking

I've got a linksys access point 811.G,54M.My computer sits in a cabinet and it was showing poor signal strength. The computer is about three and a half metres away from the access point.
To improve the signal strenth I purchased an arial for the router which was supposed to wok up to half a mile away.
I still get the signal dropping out and fluctuating which is quite annoying.Put the old cat five cable in and it works like a dream.
Any ideas out there?

you should get a strong signal without needing a special aerial. If you aren't there's something wrong, and the finger of suspicion points to this cabinet which houses your computer.

Have you tried removing the machine from the cabinet, to see what effect that has?

might be a good idea to try a post in networking forum as well?

If you have a PCI card wireless adapter you may need an aerial on an extension lead so you can move it around and hopefully find a better signal.
