Wireless network and USB2

I run a MESH with AMD Athlon XP1800, 512 MB RAM, and NVIDEA GeForce 3Ti 200. USB2 card installed. OS is XP Pro.
ISP: Virgin Broadband.
When plugging in my USB wireless adaptor - to a USB2 port - I get a message saying that the device is not recognised and has malfuctioned. When I plug it into a USB1 port it works but gives a message advising me that it will work faster if attached to a high USB2 port.
I've checked out other threads re USB and have uninstalled all the USB ports, rebooted and let Windows find and install the appropriate drivers.
Seemed to work for afew seconds having found and enabled the Netgear adaptor, established a link with the router and promptly vanished!
No joy. Same results and messages.
Does anyone know of a fix to use USB2?
Thanks in anticipation.

Have you checked to see if there are updated drivers available on the manufacturer's website for your particular Wireless Network Adapter, to implement better USB 2.0 support?
