Wireless Network Problems

I have a Mesh Computer running Windows XP Home SP2 with an Asus Wireless card. I have an IBM Thinkpd with an IBM wireless card also running XP Home SP2.

I have created a peer-to-peer network which is reportedly OK on both computers. However, while the desktop machine (connected to a cable broadband modem) can see the shared folders on the laptop, the laptop can neither see shared files on the desktop, nor can it access the internet. Can you suggest what I may be doing wrong?

Altering firewall allowed me to get internet access from laptop. Even disabling firewalls on both will not solve the file access problem. Thanks for advice anyway.
