Wireless Network Performance

Now I know not too many people are clued on the configuration of wireless networks, but I was just wondering if there are any ways of improving my wireless signal. I know walls and other aspects such as the actual distance from the access point play a more than key role, but are there any protocols I could adjust etc i.e. Software related tweaks.

Also, I have my cable modem right next to the access point. Is it advisable to put a ferrite core(s) around the signal emitters?

Regards

Nick
