wireless network- how to keep secure?

  YinHoNg 22:55 06 Sep 04

i've heard a lot about it being really easy to tap into a wireless network.

What things could i do to ensure that it is as safe as can be?

Enable WEP encryption, it's not entirely secure but it is likely to be more than enough for a home network and to deter an opportunist. Just make sure you set all machines with the same key!

You could also set the network up to only allow the specific MAC addresses of the network adapters on your PCs to have access.

(1) On access point, turn off SSID broadcast once you set up network.

(2) Set MAC filtering on access point to make sure only wireless device in the list can access access point. You can find MAC address of any
network device by typing "msinfo32" on Run.

(3) Set "WEP" encryption, you need to set up both
access point and client with the same key.

Also turn off SSID broadcasting at the router/wireless access point.
