I would like to connect downstairs pc (xp with internal dsl modem) to upstairs pc (win 98) using wireless setup. What would I need.

a wireless router and two wireless network cards. Many new wireless routers now come with their own internal ADSL modem, which is an advantage in that you can use the broadband connection on one PC without the other one being switched on.

The internal (PCI) network cards are easy to set up, as is the router, and costs are reasonable. It's the best way to achieve what you want to do.
