Just bought a wireless mouse, but the installation instructions that came with it are pretty sparse.
Just says, shut down computer, plug into USB port, restart computer. No drivers required. The light on the mouse doesn't even illuminate, even with brand new batteries. Please help me out guys.

Do the mouse and receiver have a small button each that must be pressed to `pair` them? Are there any lights on the receiver? Does the receiver appear in Device Manager (start/run, type devmgmt.msc)?

What make and model is the mouse?

B .. following your advice it says that the mouse is working properly.
There are buttons o both the USB and base of mouse.
No light on USB item, but a light on the mouse which is currently unlit.

Try using a different USB port. Also Mouse Make and Model ??

For example a Microsoft wireless mouse will have a pin size hole on the bottom, this needs resetting in co-ordination with the receiver..(Small button)...basically as brundle has pointed out.

light on the mouse which is currently unlit

check batteries are correct way round and are making good contact.

This light should flash until you press the button on the mouse and within 5 seconds the button on the HID receiver.
